Street Department

There are 10 year-round employees at the Wabash Street Department.

Focused and dedicated workers who maintain 69 center lane miles along with numerous other tasks. Those tasks include all the following, but not restricted to;

Yard Waste Pickup

  • Brush: We make every attempt to pick up your brush on the day of your scheduled trash pickup.
    • Contractors are required to haul away any debris or clippings from work they have done on your property.
  • Leaves and Grass clippings must be put in a brown recyclable paper bag Jan. 1 – Sept. 1.
  • In the fall, the department has 3 leaf vacs that typically run Monday-Friday. Starting south and working our way north repeating as necessary.

Street Repair

  • The street department repairs pot holes as necessary year round

  • We mill and resurface as much as possible on our own
  • Crack sealing is done by our department to prolong the life of the streets

Spring & Fall Clean-Up

  • Items must be placed curbside by 6 A.M. on the day of your trash route.
  • Piles are to be no bigger than a 4x8 pile
  • Items not accepted;
    • Batteries
    • Paint
    • Petroleum products
    • Household chemicals
    • Tires
    • Appliances
    • Loose shingles
    • Drywall and plaster
    • Televisions, computers, and other electronic devices
  • Spring clean-up is typically the last week of April or the first week of May
  • Fall clean-up is typically in September
  • The list of items not accepted by the department can be taken to The Wabash County Solid Waste District located at 1101 Manchester Ave.

Snow Removal

  • The city is divided in 5 routes with 2 plow trucks assigned to each area.
  • Our goal is to have the streets clean and safe for morning traffic.

Mowing Maintenance

  • Summer mowing program
    • Maintains vacant homes and lots and business park

Mosquito Control

  • The department has 3 licensed applicators
  • In May we treat catch basins with a 6 month tablet.
  • In the summer we trap, count, and test mosquitos for viruses with the help of the state, and begin spraying as needed.

Storm Line Maintenance

  • Installation and repair of storm lines.

Full Time Mechanic

  • Maintaining street, city police department, park department, and other city vehicles and equipment.

Sign Shop

  • Maintaining compliance with state and federal highway.
  • Designing, constructing, installing, and maintaining all signs owned by the city.

Compost Site

  • No Trash is Accepted at this site as we are frequently inspected by IDEM. Security cameras are in use.
  • The only items accepted are lawn clippings, brush, and leaves. The disposal of any other items will result in a $300/day fine
  • The site is open to residents within the city limits; Monday – Friday 7-3 excluding holidays
  • Mulch is free to city residents with a small fee to those outside the city limits

Dump Truck Prices –

  • $75 for a smaller household truck (no building or roofing materials)
  • $100 for regular household items (no roofing materials)
  • $200 for roofing materials 

The following list of items are NOT to be placed on the City Dump Truck.

  1. Batteries, paint, or petroleum products
  2. Household chemicals, appliances w/Freon, or tires 
  3. Televisions, electronics, computers, or microwaves
  4. LP tanks, medical waste, thermometers, thermostats, fluorescent lights & bulbs

If any of these items are on the truck, whether they are on the top or buried on the bottom, the whole load will be emptied and left when the truck is picked up
